Ayurvedic Remedies for Constipation

Constipation is a common digestive problem. It means either going to the toilet less often than usual to empty bowels or passing hard or painful stools. In most cases it occurs because the colon has absorbed too much of the water from the food that is in the colon. The slower the food moves through your digestive tract, the more water the colon will absorb from as food. As a result of this the stools become dry and hard. Defecation can become very painful and can also sometimes result in the symptoms of bowel obstruction.

Lower abdominal discomfort, infrequent bowel movements, straining to urinate, hard or tiny stools, rectal bleeding and/or anal fissures brought on by hard stools, and psychological distress are a few symptoms of constipation. There are many causes of constipation including medications, poor bowel habits, low fiber diet, abuse of laxatives, hormonal disorders, and disease primarily of other parts of the body that also affect the colon.

Ayurvedic remedies are a simple and effective solution to treat and cure constipation. Some of the most effective ayurvedic treatments are mentioned below.

Triphala Powder: Triphala is made up of three powerful herbs namely haritaki, vibhitaki and amla. It is considered to be an excellent laxative and helps to regulate digestion and bowel movements.

Alsi: Also known as flax seeds, they are high in fiber content and is considered very effective in curing constipation.

Sal: Sal or raisins are a rich source of fiber and aid in healthy bowel movements, they are also known to cure other problem related to the colon.

Amrood: They are known to have soluble fiber in the pulp and insoluble fiber on the seeds. They also help with the mucus production in the anus and with peristalsis, which is a series of contraction within the intestinal lining that helps the passage of food in the stomach.

Snehakesarin: Castor oil or snehakesarin is used from ages as the most efficient remedy for constipation and has properties that can help kill intestinal worms.

Along with the above mentioned remedies, it is also recommended to increase your fluid intake and dietary changes including foods with high amount of fiber and fruits. Apple-pear juice is also highly recommended and stewed fruits like prunes, figs, or dates especially when mixed in yashtimadhu (licorice) tea makes a tasty laxative snack and is highly beneficial in treating constipation.
